How the Kiungo system works
The Kiungo system is a way of doing things, in three steps: link the points, listen to what a community needs and what it can supply, and match the two close to home.
Link
Shops, community marketers and devices become points of presence: fixed, mobile and digital.
A point of presence is anywhere a community can reach the system. A shop counter is a fixed point. A community marketer who walks the neighbourhood is a mobile point. A phone is a digital point. Most of these already exist. Kiungo links them.
Listen
Each point is where information comes in: what a community wants and needs, and what it can make, grow and supply.
A shop knows what its street is asking for this week. A grower knows what is ready to harvest. Linked together, they show what a whole community needs and what it can supply, live.
Data is aggregated and anonymised, and never sold as individual records.
Leverage
Once demand and supply can be seen, they can be matched close to home. For what still has to come from further away, a community's combined demand becomes buying power, and value chains are rebuilt from the bottom up.
One shop buying alone takes the price it is given. A community buying together can first ask who nearby could supply it, and then ask for a better price on the rest.
Who the system links
Shops
The fixed points. Every kasiPOS counter is a place to buy, pay, collect and order.
People
The mobile points. Community marketers, each linked to a local shop for payment and collection.
Devices
The digital points. Phones where demand comes in and products and services go out.
Businesses and partners
Small businesses, brands, suppliers, telcos and retailers that sell through the system and serve it.
Within communities, and between them
Within a community
Kiungo links the shop, the people who sell door to door, the small businesses and the customers who live there. More of what a community spends can stay close to it.
Between communities
Kiungo links what one community makes or grows to another that needs it. Two communities that have never traded can be a few links apart.
It starts with what already exists
Kiungo is not a new kind of network. The shops and agents that sell airtime and handle mobile money already reach almost everyone. Today they carry a few products for a few large companies.
Kiungo uses technology to open those networks up, so that any business can use them as a route to market. Agent networks are not our invention. Opening them to everyone is our contribution.
What the system is made of
Kiungo is a system: a way of doing things. For it to live, it needs a network of linked shops, people and devices, and platforms that run on it. Two platforms are here. More will follow.
